Our recent trip to Thiruvannamalai from Chennai in our car left us us with some perceptions. Sharing them here at the reader's discretion.
After we crossed Maraimalai nagar we were near a moffusil bus stop and saw the driver of the state run SETC bus driver giving hand signal to the car before to over take him. After that car went another car and we were the third car to cross. After we had crossed 40% the Chennai to Nagarcoil SETC bus came go its right and dashed on the 60% of our car. Got down to see the green paint of the bus on the silver blue of ours and the frame of the rear side left door broken.
Traffic came to a halt and soon the public asked us to stay clear of the way and fight it out offline. A policeman came to scene and looking at the scenario correctly deduced that the bus driver was wrong and asked them to compensate for the car's damage. Both the bus driver and conductor argued with the policeman and said they don't have any money to pay. Then it was decided we go the near by Maraimalai nagar police station and file a compliant to receive a certificate. FIR would not be registered as the bus belongs to state government.
When it was decided that we go to the police station, the bus driver called on his union to gather support. Since FIR will not be filed it is going to be a waste of time for us and also the passengers in the bus weren't happy either. So we asked them how much they can compensate, the conductor came with a plain paper with our car registration number written in it and asked us to sign it to give Rs. 200. The amount of frustration was unlimited, we just dismissed them off and continued our journey.
In spite of living in a democratic country which ensure law and order there are too many practical difficulties in getting justice. There was a policeman in the accident site but could not help. If we go to the police station,
- more than 30 passenger boarded to Nagercoil in the bus will suffer,
- due to independence day the required authority (sub-inspector) in the police station may on I-day duty elsewhere,
- FIR will not be filed as the bus driver's union will come into play (in case of FIR the driver will suffer suspension or memo will be server),
- just a certificate from the police station will not help our cause and
- our on-to-ward journey will take a back set.
Whatever said and done we as a country have a long way to go.
This was just a small incident but there are thousand of such injustice happening in various parts of the country in its own capacities. On the eve of the 68th Independence day of India we would like to record - in future law and order should be implemented with iron hands and justice must prevail across the nation. Lets hope and pray for it.
Vande Mataram!
