Wayand offers a fantastic weather in a green background.
On reaching Willows, after steep drives we were escorted to our cottage after paying an advance as part of the check-in. Our cottage had a room which could act as a spa, followed by the rest room, bed room, a kitchenette and a small balcony. Having got a discount for the off season visit, this was a good stay. After having ordered our lunch, started unpacking to settle down. An Assamese temporary cook fixed us good phulka – gravy and no so good biryani (beaming yellow with lot of turmeric).
It started raining lightly making walk to the near by dam with umbrella. Very next to the dam with a good view was another cottage with a dining hall, swimming pool and lot of other amenities and unfortunately with no rooms available after 2 days. The path back to Willows had small houses and lot of trees, this is a residential area leaning towards the commercial side due to increase in tourists from Bangalore and Mysore.
Next day morning was a lazy wake up. After breakfast we hired a local driver with the help of our cottage manager and left in our car for sightseeing. Our first place was Pookat lake. It started raining as soon as we stepped. No point in going for boating with it, so walked around the lake and came out quickly.
Banasura sagar dam was the next sight. On reaching the entrance of the dam the vehicles were stopped and dam vehicle ferries you to the dam for Rs.100 for 2 after paying for the entrance fee and parking fee. The Dam is quite huge and offered fantastic view with pouring rains. This place had a small museum of birds, fishes and old coins. Motor boat ride was offered for Rs.750 per boat. We joined along with a Keralite family for Rs. 400. The half an hour ride makes one wonder about the hugeness of the dam. This family advised us to go to Papanashini waterfalls which was just few meters away.
The was a difficult walk and many steps to cross before we could see the marvelous waterfalls. It’s not difficult for a Chennai-ite to fall for water falls instantly. Water gushing through rocks provides a gorgeous site and consistent flow and the noise due to that gives a refreshing feel. Spent long time here lost on sight on the waterfalls and the chillness the water gives to your feet. People who came prepared had a joyful bath.
The obvious destination next was for food. Our driver took to us a tourist friendly restaurant offering Kerala cuisine. A complete meal was priced for Rs.89, can't think of this in Chennai. Unlike the price, quality was on a high.
Our final place for the day was another lake and it started raining as soon as we stepped in. Stood below a shelter more than 15mins and came out. Reached willows for some onion pakodas and chai. Cottage surrounded by trees had insects making noise as the day broke. The temperature was cool and fan wasn't required. Being far away from the main area this place went silent much early, so had dinner by 8PM and called off for the day.
