The temple origination story goes like this - that an employee with the East India company used to go all the way to Kanchipuram from George town to worship Katchabeshwarar. One day due to natural calamity, he was not able to come back from Kancheepuram to Chennai - however; found all is work completed by the good lord to show the whole world, about the bakthi that this man has on god. So, he started construction in 1725 and completed in 1728.
As a rare scenario this temple houses Lord Siva and Lord Perumal together. Ayyappan statue in Sabarimala was placed for a night here, before getting placed there. The Madras Ayyappa seva sangam is responsible for the Ayyappan urchavam here for the past 65 years. On the day of Pongal, Maha deepam is lighted as followed in sabarimala.

For the Guru peyarchi and Sani peyarchi the temple under goes white washing and painting. Every year during the month of panguni the temple celebrates the Car festival. All vahanams are available in this temple for the ula of Lord Shiva. The temple also houses a pond and koshala. Gods from the surrounding 9 temples will come for 6 days every year as part of the age old tradition.

asks Devaram in praise of the Lord Sivan.
While entering the temple premises we see a ground where music sessions happen during festival occasions and serves as parking lot during non-season. Through the main entrance of the temple we are greeted by the ancientness of the temple and the modern flooring. The outer praharam starts with Pillaiyar in the left most corner and Murugar in the right most corner. While walking further from Murugar, the outer praharam also houses Adi Sankarar, Anchaneya and finally a separate shrine for Ayyappan in the right side.
Once you enter the inner sanctum, Kachaleeswarar gives his darshan long side Soundarambhigai in a separate shrine to his left. The navagraha are in the left side and in the path around this praharam we can worship Panchamuga Pillaiyar, Urchavar Chandrasekharar, Murugar, Durga, 63 nayanmarsi (in a adjacent enclosure), Perumal, Thathathreyar, Natarajar, Gajalakshmi, Saraswathi and Bairavar.
