Thiruchirapalli insights - TN's tier-2 cities

Our insights into Trichy and our other two trips on TN's tier-2 cities

From our recent trip to Thiruchirapalli we could not help but compare it with the previous place we visited - Madurai and Thanjavur.

Unlike Madurai and Thanjavur, Trichy has good road transport particularly the buses. The central bus terminus opened in Dec 2021 is modern with digital name board inside so that one can identify where exactly their destination bus will start from. The island - SriRangam made by the rivers Kaveri and Kollidam is well connected to Trichy center. Apart from the government buses, lot of private buses ply with good frequency. Sri Rangam houses many government offices, so every 15 minutes buses leave to and fro between Sri Rangam and Trichy.

As we see the transportation is good, the infrastructure has to improve to accommodate. The roads are quiet narrow. We can see fly overs inside but traffic seems to be heavy round the clock. Madurai and Thanjavur were able to manage the traffic with the available infrastructure and fly over was seen coming up in Madurai.

Both Madurai and Thiruchirapalli have to connect the road between the Vaigai and Kaveri respectively. While Thanjavur did not have the river crossing over in the city.

All three cities are homes to huge temples - Madurai Meenakshi Amman, Thanjavur Peruvudaiyar and Thiruchirapalli Sri Ranganathar. So ancientness and spirituality are deep rooted.

Thiruchirapalli comes only next to Chennai and Coimbatore while Madurai and Thanjavur and more steps to come up. Madurai would take the leap once the domestic airport is approved and its much awaited AIIMS.

Madurai boasts if the popular American College and there is Thyagaraja and other famous colleges too. Thanjavur houses the Government Medical college and also works largely on food and agricultural education. Thiruchirapalli on the other hand is the home to Bharathidasan University, REC and lots of private engineering colleges.

As far as Tamil cinema goes, many belong to Madurai and hence one could see many theatres around. Their slang is famous in movies. Thanjavur is more close to the normal Tamil spoken in films. Thiruchirapalli may not pose a separate slang but it is highly influenced by Chettinad culture.

Though its good to see the tiered two cities of Tamil Nadu catching up with Chennai, they should loose their roots in the cosmopolitan culture.

All three trips opened our eyes to the growth is happening in the other parts of our state.

Anjaneyar Temple - Gerugambakkam, Porur

Very recently we came to know about the Anjaneyar temple built by actor Arjun is at Gerugambakkam. On a Sunday evening we drove towards this place. We need to detour from the Kundrathur main road to reach this temple and from then on we need to face a rough and patchy road. In just 5 minutes one can reach the temple. A small residential street leads to the temple. Very near it one could see few small stalls mushroomed up to sell pooja items. The vehicles have to be parked in the street near the temple gates. First is the corridor were few trees are seen.  On taking left is the entrance to the temple and you can see the Lord Anjaneyar much ahead. Here too are few trees uniformly spaced out. There is a coconut farm adjacent to this temple. There is a shelter above Lord Anjaneyar, but for that it is a open air temple. Facing Lord Anjaneyar and to the left and right corner are two shrines - one for Lord Ganesh and the other for Lord Anjaneyar's - Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana and God...

Aadi koozh vaarthal

Aadi koozh vaarthal is a religious occasion for most Tamil house holds. In the month of Aadi raagi koozh is served to all thirsty people around the neighborhood. Koozh is prepared and offered to Amman followed by the distribution. While offering koozh there are also other heathly eatables included in the Padayal.  The koozh preparation starts a day earlier. Rice is cooked first and raagi flour mixed in water is added to it and cooked till ragi gives a glazed look to the koozh. This is then left over night to ferment. The next day water is added to the koozh to get a drinking consistency. To this we add finely chopped onions as topping and curd to give that cooling effect. Once the koozh is all set we go about the padayal to the almighty Amman. Aadi, the Tamil month solely dedicated to Amman is for celebrating her and her kindness to her devotees. So we first offer the koozh to her in the Padayal followed by white rice and other items. The USP of Aadi koozh is that...

ECR Chennai - a Spiritual Trial

Pachai mamalai pol meni pavalavai kamala chenkan Achuta mararere ayar tham kozhute ennum. Echsuvai thavira yan poi indiralogam alum Achsuvai perinum vendean arangama nagarulanea. The East Coast Road in Chennai in known for the numerous resorts, hotels and other locations of entertainment. How about we take a spiritual trial on the same road for a change? This is what we did this weekend on a half day journey. Our first destination was Thiruvidanthai - around 30 kms from the city. The Nithyakalyana Perumal temple is an ancient one. Being near Mahabalipuram area its obvious builders were the Pallavas. Being a weekend there was a big queue of devotees till the entrance near the gopuram. Due to renovation on account of kumbabishen scheduled in near future we were allowed to workship only the urchaver instead of the moolavar. Perumal provided darshan in full floweral alangaram. Coming out after the darshan strong aroma of tamaraind rice pulled us towards...
