Erode

On the last weekend of September, taking the Friday off, we decided to spend the long weekend on a trip to Erode. Started from Chennai around 5 am in the morning and reached the Treebo accomodation at Erode around 12:30 PM. We took a break at a restaurant for breakfast and another quick one for tea on the way. The Treebo accomodation was not per our expectation, parking was available and the delux room wasn't good. So we cancelled it and took a standard room there itself. After checking in we went to the newly opened Kavery restaurant, which was just 2 buildings away for lunch. Kavery had veg and non-veg meals which was tasty and sumptuous. Post meal was the musch needed nap. Around 5:30 pm we drove to Texvalley for some shopping. No crowd due to weekday, the malls have grown with respect to the no. of shops and food joints have come up inside and near the gates. While returing back to hotel we got stuck in heavy traffic due to Ganapathi visarjan. Parked the car in a textile parking lot, walked to Kongu parotta for dinner and came back to pick the car after the traffic resided.

The next day started with Treebo providing us carry over breakfast - looked simple with 1 idly, 1 dosa, pongal and a vada but the taste was good with ample sample sambar and 2 chutneys. After having the breakfast we drove first to Chennimalai Murugan temple. One can drive up the hill skipping the numerous steps. Lord Murugar was in Santhanakaapu. A small size garland here costs Rs.150. Here also they wasn't any crowd, so we had a peaceful darshan of the Lord. From here is went to Sangameshwarar temple. It is in the Kooduthurai sangamam - merging of rivers Bhavani, Kaveri and Amutha. Erode weather was scorching at 37 degree celsius by then. We had to run before getting a shade to stand inside the temple. Here we had the darshan of Lord Sangameshwarar, Lordess Vedanayaki Amman, Lord Murugar, Lord Adikesava Perumal and Lordess Soundaravalli Thayar. Since we got into the temple via the front entrance we had the Perumal on the right first and Easwarar further to the end followed by the Kooduthurai at the fartherest. Kooduthurai seemed not maintained and devotees not being responsible enough. We worshipped thousand lingas here, one lingan with tiny thousand lingams all over it. On the way we had late lunch at an organic restaurant - meals with kaikuthal rice and returned back to Treebo as the weather wasn't supportive enough. In the evening, we left to the Thidal Murugar temple. Sitting on a small hillock in the middle of the city, this Murugar gave us darshan in Vibuthi kaapu as Lord Velayudhaswami. Some 100 steps to climb to reach the temple from the bottom of the hill. Had dinner at a small eatery near the hotel and went back.

On the second day, after the same carry over breakfast we checked out and drove to Pachaimalai Murugan temple. Residing in a small hillock surrounded by green fields this Murugar has a peaceful setting. Huge peacock sits in front of the Lord very similar to Lord Nandi before Shiva. Within 30 mins we came down the down and started going towards Sathyamangalam - we reached Bhavani sagar dam after a brief stop for a tea break. The place was desserted, visitors are restricted to only the kids play area. So we had to just sit in one of the bench there and return back to the parking area. On further enquiry, we came to know that the other places of visit too will be affected due to El-Nino condition affecting the rains. Hence decided to drive towards Chennai and stop at Kallakurichi. But on reaching Kallakurichi, we discovered it does not have a proper accomodation for the night so drove back all the way to Chennai late night. Had a small and simple trip.

Aadi koozh vaarthal

Aadi koozh vaarthal is a religious occasion for most Tamil house holds. In the month of Aadi raagi koozh is served to all thirsty people around the neighborhood. Koozh is prepared and offered to Amman followed by the distribution. While offering koozh there are also other heathly eatables included in the Padayal.  The koozh preparation starts a day earlier. Rice is cooked first and raagi flour mixed in water is added to it and cooked till ragi gives a glazed look to the koozh. This is then left over night to ferment. The next day water is added to the koozh to get a drinking consistency. To this we add finely chopped onions as topping and curd to give that cooling effect. Once the koozh is all set we go about the padayal to the almighty Amman. Aadi, the Tamil month solely dedicated to Amman is for celebrating her and her kindness to her devotees. So we first offer the koozh to her in the Padayal followed by white rice and other items. The USP of Aadi koozh is that...

Hyderabad Trip - Part 2

Swarnagiri Temple  In the morning after the complimentary breakfast at Treebo we left to the Swarnagiri Temple. During the partition the Tirupati temple stayed with Andhra Pradesh so Telangana needed this Venkateswara swamy temple. This is some 50 kms away from the Hyderabad city. We wanted to visit Yadagiri gatta temple after this but decided other wise due to the traffic and delay at fuel station. This temple is build by the Srivari trust under the guidance of Chinna Jeeyar swamigal. Bhuvanagiri were the temple is situated is a village developing now owing to the temple. As it was a Saturday, the queues were very long. So we had to go for Rs.500 special darshan ticket per head. We were let to workship the Lord Venkateswara right the entrance of the sanctum. A laddu and a red scarf was given while giving the ticket itself. A laddu prasadam was provided after the darshan like in Tirupati. Mannargudi - Day 2

On the next day at Mannargudi, we had an early start. After having tea through room service we left to the  Rajagopalaswamy temple. The temple gopuram can be seen at a large distance as the from the space was allocated for parking. Early morning we could see only 2 cars before us. After paying the parking fee we went inside the temple. Due to the maintenance work we were devoid of enjoying the beauty of the temple gopurams. We got to see the temple's famous elephant - Sengamalam as soon as we got in. This temple is called as south Dwaraka, there is small Krishna statue inside which we can worship by taking in our hands.  The main deity Lord Vasudevaperumal is seen here along with his cow. Next to his the baby Krishna idol which can we worshipped by devotees for their special prayers. We had a good darshan of the Perumal. Had theertham, jadaari and then walked towards the Goddess. The consort of Lord Rajagopalaswamy is Goddess Sengamala Thaayar. We had a very peaceful...
